How to make short notes?

 Hello people😊

IIT Kharagpur

Now the very first and obvious question you all might be having right now is, What are Short notes? Is it just framing all the stuff in short sentences? Or writing a few lines about a chapter? Or just copying everything line by line?

Ummm, sorry to say but none of them are truly true.

Actually short notes are the sum total of everything you cannot remember for long. In simple words, you should only include the information you know you won't be able to retain for a longer period of time.

Another very obvious question of course.

How do you know what topics you won't be able to retain for a longer time?

Also should you make your own short notes or its okay to use someone else's notes??

See while studying, there might be certain things you know beforehand and quite probable you remember them well. There might be some things that skipped out of your mind but you recalled as you read them again. Now these things which you recalled will be the part of your short notes. The part you remembered should be excluded. This is the fundamental of creating a short note.

Now there are also a lot of things that you are reading for 1st time. What about them? Will they be a part of your short notes as well?

See students often have this tendency to include everything they don't know of in short notes especially when they are studying for the 1st time. This is where things go wrong. You should never ever include fresh topics in short notes immediately. This is because you aren't aware what things should be included and what not. Instead read and revise from your class notes the very day that topic has been taught. Do the questions of the same topic but don’t revise it for a month. After one month, while reading the notes, mark the points that you recalled well. These are the points that needs to be discarded off. Include rest of the points in your short notes. These short notes will help you revise the topic again. You can also update your short notes every six months if desired (that's totally your choice). This way you'll notice that your short notes are becoming really really short and this will boost your confidence as well.

Circling back to the second question, Should you make your own short notes or it's okay to use someone else's notes?

See it is quite common sense now. As I told you above, short notes = sum total of everything YOU don't remember for a longer time span, therefore the things you might fail to learn or recall is not the same case with other person. For example: Sin(2θ) = 2*Sin(θ)*Cos(θ). You might fail to remember this formula at one glance but for other person making the short notes it might just be any other basic formula he's by hearted already. So he's surely gonna exclude this one. This means that the short notes provided to you by other person isn't completely applicable to you.

Note: There's a difference between short notes and complete chapter notes so if it's a complete chapter notes it is okay. It will be useful since nothing will be missed but it is not the case with short notes.

My final advice is don't fall prey to shortcuts. Don't trap yourself asking others to prepare short notes for you. Be honest with yourself. Hard work pays off.
