Tricks and Tips

 Hello people😊

IIT Kharagpur

Important Tricks:

Here are some tricks to boost your preparations

Chocolate Problem Trick

This trick is very simple. All you have to do is whenever you attempt a question and get it wrong, simply note that question in a chit and fold it. Don't forget to look at the correct solution. After some time you will have a bunch of chits, shuffle them and pick one. Whatever question of whichever subject comes out, try solving that. If you get it right, mark a star on that chit, fold and reshuffle. Whenever you encounter that chit again, solve it again. If the answer is right, star the chit, but if it is wrong cut one star. Once you receive 5 stars remove that chit from your chocolate box and don't forget to have chocolate for yourself now!

You will start this trick in greed but end up with habit of accuracy. Even I have practiced many questions this way and every time I encounter any chocolate question it gets correct automatically.

Remember, this trick works only if you don't consume much chocolates. Also you can use any other food item you love instead of chocolates.

Don't try to memorize formula

I have already explained this trick in my first blog. Again, the only way to learn a formula is by not trying to learn it. Use it too often that it automatically gets stored in your subconscious mind forever.

Whenever you practice any formula based question, see the formula from your notes even though you remember it. No matter you recalled it right or wrong now it is printed in your memory. Now on for a month whenever you try any question based on that formula, see the formula before attempting. After a month the formula will be imprinted in your subconscious mind forever. Next time you won't require to see the formula again, your brain will automatically do it for you.

Write & Stick

I personally used this trick. All you have to do is write every formula on sticky notes and stick them in your room, this way whenever you will need to revise the formula just move from one corner of the room to another. In fact trick 2 can be done very easily this way. Also you wouldn't have to sit with your notes copy every time while solving exercises. This trick was really useful to me especially 2-3 days before JEE.

Organic Diary

I have already explained this trick too in the first blog. Still I'll summarize it a bit here. Write all the reactions in a diary and then sort the mechanism based reactions. Now write the mechanisms in another diary. And in 3rd diary write only the reactants along with writing the digits of important points corresponding to it. Figure out how many questions you know beforehand. For the ones you don't remember, find them in diary 1. Also see if you remember the important points related to that reaction. Repeat this process daily. I guarantee you after an month you will be able to solve complete diary on your own. And the day you do so, Congratulate yourself.

Common Exceptions

This trick is mainly for Inorganic part of Chemistry. Most of the exceptions are shown by same element or else they are inter-related. All you have to do is find a trend. For example: If you come across some trend in specific group that has some exceptions, probability is same period in next group will also show similar exceptions. Note: This is not always true but many a times (30-40%).

Wise words by my Teachers:

Remember that JEE is always a game of relative marking. So if your paper1 didn't went well in JEE Advanced don't worry the paper was made tough. Probability is most of the people have not done well too. So instead of panicking go have water, food, walk a little and freshen up till the next paper.

In JEE Advanced, if you have 18 questions per subject,(number/type/ pattern of questions and marking scheme aren't pre-decided) solve any 6 questions per subject (out of 18). It's important to solve at least 6 questions per subject to be on safer side to qualify that subject which is another criteria for clearing the Advanced. Choose the easiest 6 to start with. Any average student can do this task very easily. Now remember, in an average paper you can easily find at least 2 simple questions per subject. Another thing to be taken care of while choosing the questions is not to fall for guessing game unless and until there's no negative marking. Otherwise Guessing will only and only ruin your paper.

Attempting 8 questions per subject secures a decent rank in an average JEE Advanced paper. Now on every question you do after those 24 questions (8*3) directly impacts your rank. Every correct answer will take you towards a good rank but every incorrect answer will prove to be your downfall. Therefore don't be greedy. Attempt only and only when you are more than 90% sure.

Take my example, I scored 190 marks in Advanced (both papers included) but I also had -32 and therefore my final score decreased to something around 158. My rank was around 4500 but only if I hadn't been greedy enough and not fallen prey to guess gaming my rank would have been around 1000. I was really anxious during the exam and this is how anxiety ruined me (although I don't have any regrets now).Another example, my friend scored around 174 but had only -2 and therefore his final score and rank were far better than mine. This is how guess gaming works.

Points to Remember During Last Few Months of Preparations:

Develop habit of practicing papers on the scheduled time of actual JEE Mains and Advanced. This year timings of the JEE Mains are 9am-12pm and 3pm - 6pm (you may get any of the two slots so be prepared) and JEE Advanced are 9am-12pm and 2:30 pm - 5:30pm.

For JEE Mains solve papers from NTA app. This app will provide you with vast amount of best papers for your effective preparations.

Take a good sleep one day before the paper. It's necessary so that you don't end up dozing off during the actual exam. Even I, one day before the exam studied just the formulas that too till 1o'clock in the afternoon. Rest all day I took a nice nap.

Also please confirm your center address beforehand. You'll might take it as a casual advice but there are many colleges with same name but different locations (sometimes in totally opposite directions) and you certainly don't want this silliest mistake to ruin your future. And if you are planning to go to the center with your friends make sure to recheck your center address twice or thrice.

Points to Remember During and After Exam:

Just like every other student, even I used to think that JEE mostly focuses on exceptions. But my dear friends it's actually a myth. In reality you have the equal probability of being asked general or exceptional cases. Out of every 5 questions, hardly 1 or 2 would be exceptions. Therefore if you are afraid of solving questions related to exceptions leave them for a while (not while preparing but leave these questions in the actual exam for the last).

Secondly, don't panic if you aren't able to solve questions during the exam. JEE follows relative marking which means if you are well prepared and still you aren't able to solve questions properly there's nothing to worry because every candidate is in the same boat. So when you aren't able to solve first 5 questions instead of getting anxious take a deep breath and start afresh from other subject. This way you'll realize your confidence is leveling up again.

Now, if your paper was not up to your expectations there's nothing to worry but the condition is you studied really really well. This is so because if you were full prepared and still the paper went bad, there's quite a high chance the paper was extremely tough. This means the ranks will automatically adjust. Most of the students after paper 1 starts self doubting if they weren't able to perform better in that exam and this impacts their 2nd paper too. So even if the paper 2 is easy they often end up messing it. Therefore always remember anxiety don't do any good but lowers your chances of winning.

Here's a tip, even if your paper went bad there's nothing to fear or feel nervous. Take a deep breath, roam outside for a while, freshen up and yeah DON'T DISCUSS the questions with others.(Even if your paper went good, roam, freshen up but DON'T discuss).

Books I Recommend:

Note: These are my personal recommendations.

Foremost thing is to go through NCERT at least once. NCERT contains very basic and fundamental concepts which most of the JEE students tend to skip thinking NCERT is not for them. Even I used to have this notion, NCERT is not for JEE but I assure you it is. It is the best place to build your foundations from. Thoroughly read Inorganic chemistry and theory chapters of Physics like EM Waves, Semi-conductors etc. from NCERT only. In fact in JEE Mains and Advanced 99% of the Inorganic questions have probability of being asked directly from the NCERT itself.

Note: The below mentioned books are to be referred only and only after you have completed NCERT and any other preferred book you are already following.

For Physics:-

Concepts of Physics by HC Verma (Both parts)

H. C. Verma

Problem in General physics by I.E. Irodov

I.E. Irodov

Out of these two books I personally loved solving I.E. Irodov.

For chemistry:-

I personally suggest only mastering up the NCERT. I didn't referred any other books but Institute notes and NCERT.

For Maths:-

Advanced problems for Mathematics for JEE Mains

& Advanced by Vikas Gupta & Pankaj Joshi

Advanced problem in mathematics for JEE mains and advanced

This book suggested by my teacher, constitutes vast variety of chapterwise quality Question Bank for JEE aspirants.

#Youtube Channels I Recommend

These are purely my suggestions.

Physics

PhysicsWalla

Sachin Sir Physics

 Chemistry

Mr. Math & Ms. Science

VEDANTU NEET MADE EJEE

IITian explains

I personally preferred Mr. Math & Ms. Science more because this was the 1st channel to publish ignored topics like Biomolecules and Chemistry in Everyday Life with a quality content covering whole NCERT.

Maths

For Maths I didn't referred any YouTube material.

How to make short notes?

Hello people😊 Now the very first and obvious question you all might be having right now is, What are Short notes? Is it just framing all the stuff in short sentences? Or writing a few lines about a chapter? Or just copying everything line by line? Ummm, sorry to say but none of them are truly true.  Actually short notes are the sum total of everything you cannot remember for long. In simple words, you should only include the information you know you won't be able to retain for a longer period of time.  Another very obvious question of course. How do you know what topics you won't be able to retain for a longer time?            Also should you make your own short notes or its okay to use someone else's notes?? See while studying, there might be certain things you know beforehand and quite probable you remember them well. There might be some things that skipped out of your mind but you recalled as you read them again. Now these thi...

#BONUS_TIP_No.2 How To Solve A Question in back exercise Correctly

Hello people😊 So as the title of the blog states, today I'm going to share with you all a very cool trick to solve questions in back exercise. This strategy is very simple.  Once you are done with solving examples, you are aware of a lot of tricks and methods to solve different kind of problems. Now you can go for attempting the questions without solutions. How to solve? First read the question properly, then try to identify have you solved an example similar to this problem or not? Probably you have. Now try to recall the steps that were there in examples and in case you are not able to recall the steps in examples, you should view that example once again or else you can proceed with the method as done in the example solving. Now let's proceed to Case 2: If you haven't solved that example before,  try to think what concept is used in the question. Do you know that concept? If yes, then try to solve that question with that concept. If you aren't able to solve then do...
